Updated from previous meeting:
-Natalia has already recorded 2 (on tourettic OCD and sleep). Good to have 4 in total online for the GA?
-Christelle podcast suggestions (extract from her email):
For episode 4
  • ✅ Scheduled for 6 May.
Interviewing D Mataix-Cols for the paper "Early-Life and Family Risk Factors for Tic Disorder Persistence into Adulthood » (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37246931/)
  • Interviewing Lindsay Berg about « Symptom Severity and Health Impacts of Functional Tic-Like Behaviors in Youth  (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38603984/): interesting, but about FTLBs and not tics.
  • Making an episode about DBS (indications, risks, disparities of access), I thought about asking Yulia. (Suggestion by Kirsten: Juan Carlos Baldermann)
For episode 5
  • I would like to interview a teacher and a parent about challenges of having a child with tics in the classroom, and then interview Julian Fletcher about potential solutions. It will take more time to do and Julian is busy this month, so I think it’s good for Episode 5.
ESSTS Conference 2025 location
The short version; both Bergen and Paris are unviable options as it stands.
-Heike has been very active and has collected different cost estimates; unfortunately, non budget-compatible.
-From the Parisian venues contacted, 3 out of 6 replied, all of them out of reach.
-Realistic brainstorming; other alternative?? Cheaper destination*? Virtual conference? :(
*Anna might have a back-up plan(ish) to consider in case of a dead-end.
Updated from previous meeting:
-Athens as a back up; 4 venues have been contacted for estimates
Finances
-Check the budget sheet & sub-sheets (button top of the page).
-Discussion (faster to communicate the current landscape orally than type; Anna says sorry!)
Updated from previous meeting:
-Contacted Billie Eilish's managers, by @Christelle
-Donation campaign?
(Andreas already composed a draft/concept for consideration 😊)
Dear Friends of ESSTS,
Over the past years, ESSTS has grown and advanced in big strides with an ever-increasing number of attendees at our annual conference, and a wide choice of services and resources now offered (podcasts, webinars, the TS School…).
However, sponsorship money is on the decrease, and membership adhesions remain disappointingly low. For this reason, despite all the hard work, the shiny website and newsletters, we continue to struggle financially, barely making it from one year to another. In other words, we need a financial buffer and, if the term is appropriate, some peace of mind to continue working over the next years.
Thus, we would like to make a plea for donations. The donation button has actually existed on the ESSTS website since 2018 but never used.
Maybe, if you have patients or colleagues who might wish to help us, make them aware. Equally, we are always glad to welcome new sponsors. And please do not hesitate to contact us in case of questions.
Thank you for your support!

  • Interviewing D Mataix-Cols for the paper "Early-Life and Family Risk Factors for Tic Disorder Persistence into Adulthood » (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37246931/): I like this topic but maybe I’ll have more difficulties reaching the authors.
  • Making an episode about DBS (indications, risks, disparities of access), I thought about asking Yulia.
For episode 5
  • I would like to interview a teacher and a parent about challenges of having a child with tics in the classroom, and then interview Julian Fletcher about potential solutions. It will take more time to do and Julian is busy this month, so I think it’s good for Episode 5.

TS under-represented zones session
As it stands: 2 pre-recorded videos, 1 live presentation (Konstantin).
-Possible participation by Tourette Greece (ongoing communication) and/or Greek professionals (attended online TS-school).
-Can we also include Nigerian colleague Joy Legbo (Paediatric Neurology, currently shadowing Andreas in Paris for 6 months, husband with TS)? She attended the online TS-school and would be very interested in sharing her experience. (Discussed with Marla, TTAG is in favour!)
-If yes, is it possible to consider waiving her registration fee? Andreas has offered to cover her traveling, accommodation & social event expenses, as she does not currently have any funds to cover such activities.
-In this case, it would only be fair to offer the same to Konstantin? Unless his has financial support from his institution?!

Opening ceremony cocktail & social event
- Cost estimate for SE at the hotel still pending; they have confirmed that the restaurant chef will get back to us.
- Cost estimate at Villa Panza + catering by Etiqua restaurant received; see Budget above, click on "Social event" sheet. See proposed menu.
- One of Cristiano's collaborators suggested to hold both events at the hotel (as the cost estimate for dinner at VP was expensive) and to offer a guided tour at Villa Panza right after the opening ceremony cocktail instead, ...to add a local touch.
CE for guided tour received: guided tour 100 euros + VAT (1 guide for every 25 people), guided tour in English 130 euros + VAT, valet 100 euros + VAT
- 2 more restaurant suggestions just came in: Il Gestore and Vecchio Convento.
- Discuss available & realistic scenarios (price/distance/interest –for guided tour–) and try to open social event registration online ASAP-ish.

Board meeting III, 01.11.2023-Agenda of the day

Meeting with Cristiano (24.10) quick debrief points:
- Teachers' event will take place on Wed 12 Jun between 14:30-17:00 at the University main hall (large audience expected ~300), 1,5km from the conference hotel.
-  This is a free event.
-  In addition to local speakers, the role of...international guest speakers will be bestowed upon Andrea and Davide; no need to arrange for a simultaneous translation.
- Cristiano will enquire about the possibility of covering the costs of ST for the TS-school, as it will allow young (local) neuropsychiatrists to attend. (Will also enquire about TTAG session and BT workshop)
- Topic suggestion by Renata Rizzo: Round table to discuss treatment-resisting cases, compare experiences, etc.
Possible to integrate it into Clinical rounds session?
- Social event alternative; "Lady Tourette" theatre on Thu 13.06
- Ask Valentina whether additional BT trainers might be needed to run the IT BT worksop(s).
Nanette already got in touch-to discuss.
- Social event venue options; hotel, or different restaurant/space. Cristiano will gather quotes.
He suggests the SE take place at the hotel (beautiful setting) and the opening ceremony cocktail is held at a different location, combining a bit of sight-seeing experience, such as:
Villa Panza
Sacro Monte
Hermitage Santa Caterina
Torba Monastery
Time-sensitive matters! ⏱️
Speakers & programme
Check the speakers sheet; how do we proceed and shall we make some names/sessions definitive and thus...announceable?
- Christos Ganos was initially invited as a EU speaker, but will be moving to Toronto very soon. Travel expenses for N.A. speakers include up to 2,000USD for airfare and 3 nights vs €200 and 2 nights for EU speakers...
If, however, Irene and Kevin are the only ones invited from across the pond, then we remain within the 3 transatlantic guests that has been the "affordable" number so far. To discuss.
Sponsors
Once we have a concrete draft let the door-knocking begin!
- See Sponsors Varese 2024 sheet and feel free to proceed. ;)
- Same sponsorship levels as last year?
- We have the 2nd hotel deposit coming up, €17,6K on 20th Jan 2024

Rebrand the "E" (=European)
-  E stands for...Everyone is invited
Newsletter
- Will include the link of the website
- New ideas are welcome
Tourette and tic disorders MDS Study group:
- During the MDS conference, a collaboration between the study group and ESSTS was discussed.
- We should invite a speaker from this group to present their activities.
Suggesting a topic/symposium for the next MDS conference:
- OCD, ADHD, misophonia (“non motor symptoms of Tourette”?) -> we will submit it before the deadline (8 SEP).
Travel grants
- 2-3 nights + waived registration fees (+ travel allowance, €100?)
- 2 grants?
- Criteria: best abstracts + student/researcher > 5 years of qualification, or nurses; to be defined
Suggested topics and conference speakers:
- Session with speakers from underrepresented zones (e.g. Turkey, Russia, Latin America, etc), so that they present their problems, and that we discuss how we can support their group.
- Suggestions from TTAG? (ESSTS will meet with them next week).
- TS school; it's a go!
- Training event for teachers & educators.
To be discussed with Cristiano at the next board meeting.
- Inviting Irene Malaty on a topic she could suggest. Natalia will contact her.
- Maybe no session on genetics this (or every) year.
- Session on Arts & Tourette: Natalia will make a suggestion. Determine panel duration.
- James Leckman + music?
- “Speed dating” breakfast between senior and junior researchers.
- Christos Ganos and his imaging paper.
- Panel with Noa and John Piacentini on parents interventions. Nanette is getting in touch.
- Controversy topic; Should we still use YGTSS to measure tic severity? Tic assessment via KI? Consider Münchau/Martino/Izhar Bar-Gad/Goetz?
- Valentina Baglioni for Italian BT workshop. +Italian workshop available as a separate event.
Other plans & questions:
- Contacting the Chinese researchers who published their work on the traditional granules.
- Clinical rounds: for 90 min or 2h?
- Someone should go to Italy to check the location.
- Educational sessions should be promoted more on social media.
- Organising the next Webinars (November? Or End of January?), between 4-6 pm.
- Launch an online version of TS-school? Nanette to lead programme-drafting. Free access to this event for ESSTS' members
- Mixed format for poster presentations; oral presentation onstage and possibility to opt out.
Recommend landscape orientation for onstage presentations, extend to 3 minutes and add a 3rd poster round to the programme.
- Podcasts? Yes, we continue. New papers, hot topics, etc. Christelle & Natalia to get involved. (Donald L. Gilbert? link 1 and link 2)

TTAG
- Were there any discussions already, between ESSTS and TTAG?

Upcoming running expenses
- $276 + tax for annual web hosting plan renewal (16 Sep 2023)
- Minor, <€25 expenses might occur in case of temporary upgrades (i.e Zoho Campaigns), GoDaddy domain renewal, as Ticket Tailor commissions when tickets are sold, etc.
Sponsors
- Are we keeping sponsorship levels for 2023-2024 the same as last year?
- And following similar communication modus operandi? Reminder sheet
- Anything else we might be able to include in our offer?
Travel grants
- What type/amount of financial support are we considering? i.e. 2-3 hotel nights, a reasonable rate for train ticket/flight and waived registration fees?
- How many are we aiming for?
- If the incoming funds evolve around the same numbers as last year, our current balance already allows us to offer a couple+ ones.
Ideas; speakers & topics
(Discussion continuation, some points from previous meeting, see minutes tab ⬇️)
Networking:
- Breakfast/"speed date"/or similar concept, to allow introduction & exchange between young and experienced researchers
- Time slot on the programme?
(If BT workshops follow the Brussels format, 2-hour split, could it be possible to make good use of a couple of PM hours on the 1st day ??)
Arts & TS panel
- Natalia to elaborate on her idea
Panel-MDS TS Study Group presentation
- As above, Natalia to elaborate ;)
Christos Ganos

Symposium on parents' interventions with John Piacentini's participation

- Flora Vaccarino? ...back home ?! 🇮🇹
Controversy followed by poll for 2024?
Beyond/in addition to TS-school
-Training course for educators/teachers? (Cristiano's suggestion/wish)
Consider organising the TS-school (for conference participants/local professionals) and the training course for local educators/teachers? Especially if this is largely taken care of locally...
To do list "before & after":
- Ask invited speakers for their disclosures.
- Send a survey link to participants after the meeting to collect feedback.

Online educational events
- A "mini version" of TS-school?
- A more elaborate offer, very similar to TS-school, delivered in 2 or 3 installments? Like when registering for an online course?
- Other?
Introducing Members area
- Consider what content, whether specific sections of a page or entire pages, will be accessible to members only from now on.
- Once introduced, it can be applied retrospectively as well.
Future meetings
2025
- Current state of affairs regarding Tel Aviv? Are they still interested/available?
2026/2027
- Norway?

(Click "Abstract submissions" button above, open "Final programme")
Nanette has already sorted out the PP rounds ✅
Book of abstracts
-Edits to be made?
-Prepare a "collective" welcome message as this is the current board's last meeting?
Opening ceremony
-Theatre teaser performance has been confirmed. Attending the full performance has also been added online as an alternative for those not coming to the social event.
Who can coordinate/contact "speakers" for Mary's opening ceremony tribute video? Pleeease!
Sponsors
-Funds received=€42K in total. Asarina transfer pending
-Neupulse (2) and Emalex (2) will be attending the conference.
-Discuss about Neupulse's live demo; where/when does it take place? During Stephen's talk? (Friday 13:30)
Accommodation
Last Rastelli installment must be paid on 16 May, no modifications possible past this date.
-Any last minute hotel reservation changes?
Board elections
-Anna is finishing up candidates doc; news post will be created on the website and newsletter will be sent to active board members to review candidates and get info on voting process
Suggestions, remarks on the above?
From previous board meeting-tasks in progress:
Catering
Coffee break bites being taken care of/in progress
Brainstorm on possible issues
-Shall we all start listing those things/areas that need to be anticipated and covered before they actually become issues?
There will be either an app or most likely a dedicated page offering answers to various questions and topics such as transport, tickets, plugs & converters, etc. ;)
Print list; badges/posters/name tags/banners, etc...
Being taken care of/in progress
Accessories/gifts/custom made items
Shall we offer Mary something like an honouring plaque & flowers? Other ideas?
Other items on list in previous meeting agenda; being taken care of/in progress
Varese
-Check Varese docs; propose some edits (there are a few!) & proceed with deposit payment?
This does not need to be decided today but a reply is expected within this/following week...

-FR workshop: 5 (4 conference & 1 external)

-Course of action?
-Merge all TS-school presentations into a downloadable file and make it available via QR code on the attendees badge?
-Consider printing it as a booklet?
Sponsors
-Funds received=€40K in total:
3 Bronze (€5K) Neupulse, Scisparc, Bedrocan, 1 Gold (€15K) Emalex and 1 Silver (€10K) Noema
-Neupulse (2) and Emalex (1 or 2?) will be attending the conference.
-Contact Azarina as asked in case they can offer more than Bronze? Nanette?
-Eurox/Avextra pending
Accommodation
-We have 2 single and 2 double rooms available at Rastelli; whom shall we make happy? :)
Ideally attendees who participate in the morning run?
Catering
Looking for an affordable option to include some cookie-type bites into the coffee breaks outside Bistro Tembo's quote. (Anna/Seonaid liaising with local bakeries and sourcing online solutions)
Board elections
-@Natalia, submit your candidacy! Deadline is 23 April!
-Shall we remind Tammy/Christelle?
CME
-Application submitted and payment made on 17.03-€454
Poster rounds/OPs; UX for authors & attendees
-As last year, are we making posters available online as well to facilitate re-viewing and "Best of" voting?
-Shall we offer PP authors the possibility to send us a video link presenting their data (as we did at the virtual meeting) that will be accessible via QR code next to their printed poster?
Thinking about the tight time constraints here and how we could still optimise the experience...
I even thought of extracting the audio of the presentation instead; it would be like the guided museum tours where you look at the exhibits, you scan and hear the description :))
-Other suggestions?
-Anything specific that should be mentioned when contacting authors on Friday to deliver the good news?
Cultural activities
-Live music is a no-go (not necessarily a bad development-Anna will elaborate)
-Theatre extract still OK-details are being finalised. (Seonaid might have more to add)
Accessories/gifts/custom made items
-As in Lausanne, budget allows for (better quality this year!) memento tote bags
-Reward-award items, –water bottles, custom sports bag– for morning run finalists (3) and memento medaillons or similar for courageous participants?
-Same concept for "Best of" winners?
-In addition to the conference banner, shall we make a "tribute" one to TS Awareness day in combination with Mary's birthday?
Media/Exposure
-A few local/national Belgian associations still to contact notably for TS-school & NL/FR workshops)
-Given the buzz/momentum triggered by L. Capaldi documentary; shall we reach out to journalists that have already written on TS subject and invite them to the conference (irrespectively of whether they will actually come) but mainly aim at some publicity for the Society on the mid/long run? (Anna will elaborate on some ideas/cases...as audacious as they might sound! ;) )
Volunteers & help on site
-We are prone to face a bit of a challenge here, to discuss live.
-TTAG members are eager and have agreed to help but their meeting coincides with what we expect to be simultaneous arrival on the first day...
Brainstorm on possible issues
-Shall we all start listing those things/areas that need to be anticipated and covered before they actually become issues?
There will be either an app or most likely a dedicated page offering answers to various questions and topics such as transport, tickets, plugs & converters, etc. ;)

Suggestions ESSTS conference 2023
-Perhaps revamping the idea of the 'inhibition in TS' controversy
-Yulia Worbe has recently done some interesting new work on inhibition/impulsivity on TS - she might be approached and asked to suggest an opponent for the controversy
-Autism spectrum disorder
-Sex differences in TS
-Controversy 1:  "Do diagnostic criteria have any value in understanding and treating tic disorders?" Stephen Jackson – Natalia Szejko
-Controversy 2: “Is ASD overdiagnosed” (in TS / in general): Daniel Alvarez-Fischer - ??
-Pain in TS: see paper by Taylor et al. Frontiers in Psychiatry 2022
-Talk Daphna Ruhrman: “Emotion Regulation and Tic Disorders – Child and Parents”
-Reinvite Carol Mathews (two talks, see initial Lausanne 2020 programme): (i) “Compulsions, impulsions, and tics: update on the current state of genetic research”; (ii)“Picking, pulling, and pinching: the role of habit and harm in TS”
-One day TS school prior to the meeting ? (see program for the three day TS Paris summer school)
-Follow-up: functional tic-like behavior: still an issue?
-New treatment strategies: what can be done if HRT and antipsychotics are ineffective and what is in the pipeline?

Natalia's addendum part:
1.     The use of artificial intelligence/new technologies for diagnosis and better planning of treatment in TS
2.     Seonaid to present on pain in TS
3.     I would try to invite some from Asia/ China to talk about TCM and tics as recently there are many studies about it
4.     New biomarkers in TS (for example microbiome) – as a paradigm of precision medicine such as described here.
5.     Sleep and chronotype in TS

Are we considering a (full) hybrid format? Alternatively, consider selected talks for LIVE-streaming?

Next campaign

Announcing elections (+ consider/discuss everything related!)

Membership fees for 2023?

Live interview/webinar-ish topic?

Meeting in Brussels – first discussion & logistics
1. We should contact the sponsors –the same as for Lausanne and the new ones

3. There should be enough space for posters in the venue
4. Poster rounds will be led by Nanette 😊
5. There should be a microphone available!

Programme
6. Think about the speakers and topics (some ideas for topics: autism, sex differences in TS)
7. Send 3 topics we are interested in to Nanette: deadline 01.09.22
8. Controversies discussion clinical rounds – move it earlier/not last session on the programme
9. Consider again Carol Mathews as an invited speaker
10. Programme needs to be ready by 01.12.22

Lausanne meeting debrief- 😃/😐 from 27.06.22
+
Likes from the meeting in Lausanne:
-Poster round - always as a separate session, not during the breaks
-QR codes, polls, vote “best of”
-Long breaks
-Enough time for discussion at the end of OPs
-ESSTS workshop BT in different languages - keep it (make “minimum attendance” necessary for non-English workshops)

Dislikes/changes after the meeting in Lausanne:
-In the future, selection of oral presentations should be done by at least two people and should be morediverse (more centres)
-Be more inclusive during the selection of topics for the scientific session
-General assembly after the lunch break
-Introduce new people - welcome, explain who they are for the younger attendees
-Maybe introduce consultations with experts?
-No more than one OP assigned to the same author

Open topics after the meeting:
-Clinical rounds/Video session - when to organize it? start earlier? Include explanation for younger colleagues what “clinical rounds” stand for
-Problems with deadlines - shall we be more or less flexible??
-How to involve TTAG - discuss this with Seonaid
-Move Kevin’s “Best of” to the end of the conference?

Proceedings after the meeting:

-Meet with organisers from Brussels
-Organise summer school in Paris for young people - organize online meeting or maybe before the congress?
-2024 - Tel Aviv Nanette to contact
-Christano Termine as a backup for the meeting in 2024
-What to offer free of charge and what as paid content on our website?
-Some presentations of the speakers will be available on our website
-Payment for Anna - see how much money is left
-Schedule a meeting with Seonaid (Back to Wed-Fri format? 7 June-on M. Robertson’s birthday?)
-When to prepare the programme - November?
